OLPC's Linux-based operating system available for download
If you've got a tick to spare, or you're simply the type who shoves any flavor of Linux on any flavor of gadgetry that'll accept it, here's yet another opportunity to kill some time and check out the OLPC a bit further. Apparently, the Linux-based Sugar OS from the One Laptop Per Child project is now available via a bootable LiveCD ISO, and according to user reports, works quite well aside from the "lack of WiFi capability" on a certain MacBook. But hey, why are you relying on us to tell you how it works out? Go on and tag the read link whilst grabbing a fresh cup of joe, and do report back with ample amounts of praise (or grouses) once you've checked things out.

If you have a mac book you probably are not running linux, and you are most likely not in an impoverished third world country :-P

Somehow, I don't think the OLPC project will cause Microsoft to go under, but hey, it's cool if you see it that way. I'm dling it right now, can't wait to test it out!

I've just booted the live CD on my P4 1.8GHz, 512MB box, and browsing the engadget web site to post this message was horrendously painful. I assume it is the lack of hard drive installation, but wow, I have less issues with my IPAQ 4150 when reading engadget.
It had a problem setting the wired LAN DHCP delivered address, but an 'Ctrl-Alt-F1' to a root shell, followed by ifdown/ifup and everything was sweet.
The switch to gnome is neat, but the terminal didn't work when I selected it.
Not bad, but now I have to find a sacrificial laptop on which to install it for real.

The easiest linux would probably be ubuntu. Find it at: http://www.ubuntu.com/ Dowload the .ISO -file, and burn it with ISOburn at: http://www.paehl-info.de/cdr/isoburn.zip
Then, pop in the new Ubuntu cd in your box, boot it up, and after a quick install, your ready to go.
It does howerver have some issues with writing to storage-devices using Windows formats, but there is a fix for it, if you use the FAT format. NTFS is not recommended. It is not entirely stable, and could trash your files.
Best of luck:)
