Fujitsu UMPC concept resurfaces at WinHEC, this time with specs

Although it's waded into the water with their "ultra-portable" machines before, Fujitsu hasn't yet taken the jump into the as-yet unproven UMPC market -- although it's been rumored to be working on a device for some time now. That looks to be changing, however, as the folks over at Winfuture have managed to score some pics and specs of Fujitsu's latest concept at WinHEC. Featuring an 800MHz Intel Sealey processor, 1GB RAM, a 40GB disk, two cameras, a 5.6-inch 1024 x 600 display, and an optional 7-hour battery, the 1.1-pound effort won't win any design awards but certainly looks, uh, sturdy. No word on pricing or availability, but we spotted this thing at Intel's Developer Forum last month classed as a "professional" device, so you'd better start saving those pennies.

I actually like the design. If its cheap enough and comes with SSD and a trackpoint, I would seriously consider this if I was in the market for a UMPC.

Meh. I like the Samsung Q2 a bit more. Not only because of its screen size but also because of the usability factor. There is such a thing as too small. You wouldn't think 1.5" would make that much of a difference in a device but it really does.

Why in God's green earth would I purchase a UPMC with a 1024X600 screen when I can get a base white MacBook that can run rings around this chunk of shi...... sh! SILICONE and still feel hip and cool for very little more money.

And if I really wanted to spend the bucks then there is the T61 Thinkpad which just ROCKS! Well considering the reliability of my babied T60, maybe not.

Speaking of processors. I really want to see how Vista performs on these CPU's. Vista is simply unhappy on my 1.4Ghz Pentium M ThinkPad with 1.25GB of RAM. That being said the thing only has a 32MB GPU which is definitely a bottleneck. So who knows. I do want to play with one of these things before I drop a grand+ on one though.

No, I am not a moron! Why do I need a UPMC when I have a laptop (Actually I have a T60 IBM) and a SmartPhone running Windows Mobile. I already have an email machine and the T60 is capable of surfing the web via EVDO.

The MacBook is just an option to show that the price of small, light weight laptops have fallen to the point where I can get a 1200X800 14" wide screen device capable of running OSX and Vista in one device for a low entry price point. If I wanted bigger and heavier, the HP 5XX was released yesterday running neutered Vista business and is only capable is basic functions and is not capable of the complete Vista multimedia experience.

And why would you want to put Vista on a UPMC. Vista is sluggish on my T6600 Core2Duo Desktop with 4 gig of Ram, 4Gig of Ready Boost, and a 7950 NVidia graphics adapter when compared with XP.

Think before you call people names. It does a body good!

Form-factor wise it looks almost identical to my Samsung Izzi Pro which dates from 2000! Always wished it would run a full OS though.

Man that thing is ugly.
but on the other hand it looks like the first umpc that could be usefull. 1GB of ram sounds good, and a 800MHz proc should be suffiecient for such a device. And with a promised batery life of 7 hours, five should be realistic, wich is at least one hour more than i get on my ibook.

and no, a macbook isnt "better", its a whole different thing. A macbook (or any other "bigger" laptop for that matter) is great for working on "big things" (long reports, drawing stuff, heavy computing (mathematica...), a bit of gaming, heavy multitasking (at the moment i have running two email clients, two writing apps, two browsers, ical, iphoto, itunes, preview, aktivity monitor, terminal and a printer programm, must of it with multiple windows or tabs).
A umpc on the other hand is (or better said should be) usefull for lighter tasks, like just surfing and mailing, or taking notes and other lighter tasks, that you have to do all day, for example in classes, or at a meeting with a client ... where it is more important to have a light device with good battery life and a small footprint, than to have big computing power and a big screen.

so i would like to have both, a macbook and a umpc (with a small linux), but there are three things still missing: usable designs, realistic prices and a syncing solution, so that i can take my macbook or my umpc, depending on my dayliy needs without having to worry that my current work is on the device that i dont have with me.
