Samsung announces three new Q1 Ultra models

While they aren't updates on the order of the refresh to the original Q1, Samsung has apparently decided that it was time to give the Q1 Ultra a bit more company, with it today announcing not one, but three new models. On the low end of the lot, the Q1U-ELXP gets a 600MHz A100 Ultra Mobile processor and a 40GB hard drive with a list price of $999. Taking things up a notch, the $1149 Q1U-XP boasts a 800MHz A110 processor and an 80GB hard drive, while the $1649 Q1U-SSDXP unit packs the same processor and a speedier but pricier 32GB NAND flash drive. From the looks of it, all the other specs remain the same as the standard Q1 Ultra, with Windows XP Tablet Edition serving as the OS. From the sound of it, all three should be available from the all usual sources immediately.

These machines weigh 1.5 lbs and can be used while standing up. They're nothing like overpriced underpowered laptops.

Not trying to imply they had 800mhz processors in 1991. What I'm trying to imply is that these UMPCs are very immature. If you were living in 1991 and I made an identical analogy comparing a 91 laptop to a 1980's PC both you idiots would have made the same stupid comments. For the educated here I'm sure the majority will wait another 5 years when they are instant on, have 3ghz processors, a boatload of memory, run a good 8 hours on a single charge and cost less than $500. Right now its nothing more than an overpriced toy. Enough said.

He may be being a prick, but his point is still valid: Until battery life actually reaches at least 8 hours, and preferably more like 12 to 16, there's nothing "ultra-mobile" about these PCs. Just what am I supposed to do with one of these? Be out of the office, working, and then say, "Whoops! Looks like I'll need to go recharge for a couple of hours!" Or, alternatively, carry around three or four spare batteries?

Until I can get through a working day (10 hours at minimum) on a single charge, I'm going to have to agree with Rick Person. The UMPC is immature and unworkable as a business solution.

Wow, you are clueless. UMPC's are NOT desktop replacements. Hell, they're not even laptop replacements. If you want power then go get a laptop/desktop. UMPC's are about mobility. Why would you need so much power in device thats you would only want to be running a few apps at the same time?

As far as I'm aware.. the normal battery for the Ultra is ...4 hours? And the extended battery is about 7. Theres also the Everun which is like 6 hours and 12 on the extended (but it pulls it off by being such a small device).

Not sure if your going to see this but... the finger print reader is only about $15, so the extra price on the Q1U-V is just for Vista.

Why did you buy the Q1U-V when it seems you actually want the Q1U-XP?

It didn't say how much ram is aboard. I could run Red Hat 4 with Open Office just fine on my 600 MHz Dell with 512 MB sdram. With a flash HD and 1 GB DDR I would think this would be just fine for a lot of applications if they would just drop all the weight it takes to run XP. No, it wouldn't be a multimedia powerhouse, but you could store a respectable amount of Music and office work on board. With usb peripherals a user could put together the perfect combination for consulting or on the run business.

F-ing hell.

I've had a Q1U-V for a few weeks. It doesn't have the fingerprint reader and only has a 60GB HD and it cost $50 MORE than the Q1U-XP model which was supposed to ship with a 60GB HD.

This is the second time they've done this.

The originally were shipping the Q1U-EL with a 600MHZ A100 and then just before shipping it - without really telling anyone - changed it to the 800MHz A110 and removed the Bluetooth radio.. and then upped the price almost $100.

I've never seen a company a screw up a product launch this badly. Constantly changing products (based on their website and marketing info - and their support line's info), constantly changing prices - and way behind schedule on launching the actual devices (based on their own published ship dates).

They should offer a one to one exchange 'downgrade' for Q1U-V owners who want the Q1U-XP device instead. No rebate or refund - just a straight swap. I'd be happy with that.

Mind you, Samsung barely honours their warranty and have told most of their resellers 'no returns', so I suspect this is a pipedream at best.

The gig is 60, engadget have got it wrong. Please check some online stores like www.pcconnection.com for confirmation.
